Live Science: Magic mushrooms temporarily 'dissolve' brain network responsible for sense of self

A recent study published in Nature and highlighted by Live Science found that psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, temporarily disrupts the default mode network (DMN) in the brain, which is responsible for self-reflection and the sense of self. This desynchronization leads to altered perception of time and space and can have lasting effects on brain connectivity for weeks. These findings suggest that psilocybin's ability to reorganize brain networks may underlie its therapeutic potential for treating depression and other mental health conditions.
