Psychedelics may improve mental health by reducing brain inflammation, Harvard study reveals

A recent Harvard study highlights the potential of psychedelics, such as psilocybin and DMT, in improving mental health by reducing brain inflammation. These substances interact with serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, modulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and regulating microglial activity, which are crucial in managing neuroinflammation—a key factor in conditions like depression and anxiety . Additionally, research indicates that psilocybin promotes neuroplasticity by increasing the density of dendritic spines, enhancing communication between neurons, and potentially reversing the neural atrophy associated with chronic stress and depression . These findings suggest that psychedelics could offer a novel approach to treating mental health disorders by addressing both inflammatory processes and neural connectivity.
